Yorkshire Provender is a major soup manufacturer specialising in soups made with local and fresh seasonal ingredients. When they redesigned their packaging and label designs they chose ALTech UK to supply new labelling equipment to both increase manufacturing capacity and improve the quality of their finished product.
Working closely with the ALTech pre-sales technical team they chose an ALline linear labelling system to automatically apply two labels to the back and front of their plastic tapered pot, leaving as much space as possible around the labels for the soup to show through the container.
Utilising a printed clear material for the labels also allows for a clear area on the main front label, cleverly shaped to suit the soup main ingredient, through which the soup can also be seen in the pot.
Tapered tubs and pots with labels wrapped around the body are always a challenge for any labelling system due to the required shape of the labels and the profile of the tub. ALtech UK chose to utilise an ALline system with indexing, in-phase application, to capture and rotate the tub for label application, a standard ALtech option for round products that require more than one label applied in relation to either a container feature or as in this case relative to each other.
The labels for this application are produced as alternating back and front designs on a single label web and are shaped to suit the tapered tub profile. The two labels are applied in a single pass whilst the tub is rotating in the indexing module using an Alritma XM high speed applicator head, which has, as standard, a feature for multiple labels on a single product built in to its control system.
The Alritma XM also has a 400mm diameter label roll capability to increase the run time between label roll changes and the roll is locked to the progressive unwind system to ensure accurate label web control at all dispensing speeds and label sizes, thus ensuring accurate and consistent label application.
Standard within the control of the ALritma labelling head range is the ability to store away 40 sets of labelling parameters for quick product changeovers, automatic double product signal rejection, dimensional label position adjustment and shift register product management, meaning complete label setups can be recalled at the touch of a button.
The ALline machine is fully guarded to the latest EU safety regulations, with pantograph style, fully interlocked doors, minimising the floor space required to fully open them.
Martin Muir, Factory Manager at The Yorkshire Provender company says he is delighted with the new system that has been in production now for 4 weeks and has labelled in the region of 150,000 containers without a hitch.
