Vacuum Skin Tray Labelling Solutions

ALTech UK have recently installed two machine types designed specifically for vacuum skin trays; one, labelling in a traditional narrow edge leading C-wrap format and the other, creating a wide edge leading label sleeve in a D-wrap format.

Due to the often variable shape and size of the product and flexibility in the trays, vacuum skin packs are typically more challenging to label than regular trays. In the example case study of  labelling black puddings for Macsween’s of Edinburgh, the C-wrap labelling machine had a bespoke solution of driving the pack from above, rather than the side, to ensure precise transfer and drive of the product. This configuration was supported by ALTech’s standard ‘label flag’ functionality, which splits the feed of the label into two parts and allows the dispensing peeler to be positioned closer to the product for greater label control, accuracy and reliability.

ALTech’s  D-wrap labelling solution typically applies wide edge leading labels (but can also be offered in narrow edge format), providing the option to replicate the finished application properties of a sleeve, should the customer require. It can be used with either a standard fully adhesive label or thicker card label. If using card, the adhesive  is deadened and perforations are made at the fold points to give the appearance of a sleeved product with defined adhesive contact points.

The D-wrap labelling solution incorporates ALTech’s proven standard module components, configured specifically for vacuum skin packs. Key features include a floating top holding belt which applies the absolute minimal pressure on the product, ensuring it is not damaged or bruised in any way (particularly relevant with skin pack products which tend to vary in height), 3d printing technology to profile the exact shape of the tray and a high speed rotary adaption system capable of operating at more than 100 trays per minute dependent upon product size and frequency.

ALTech’s  most recently installed D-wrap labelling solution for Albert Darnell Ltd involved labelling salmon trays created by a Multivac ‘Darfresh’ machine. The product was extremely variable in size which frequently caused the packs to mis-shape; due to the adaptability of ALTech’s D-wrap solution these variations were easily accommodated. The machine also incorporated an ICE intermittent printer for country of origin and use by information, suitable for both card sleeve type and standard labels.

The abilities of these machines are innovative and exciting – offering the potential to act as either a label or sleeve applicator, applying them completely automatically and at a significantly reduced machine capital cost.

The success of these solutions has been proven and commended by ALTech’s customers; Albert Darnell Ltd have recently ordered a C-wrap machine to accompany their D-wrap solution and Macsween, Scotland’s premier supplier of Haggis, has many ALTech machines within its production lines, including two specialist horizontal labelling units to label haggis chubs, demonstrating the breadth of ALTech’s labelling solutions.
